NETWORKING
AND NETWORK SERVICES
Networking allows you to connect multiple computers to each
other, to file servers, share Internet access, or share printers,
and other network resources.
Some things to consider:
Server Software:
Apple File Sharing vs. AppleShareIP vs. Windows Server vs. OSX Server
vs. SharePoints. We can help you determine which one is the best for you,
and then set it up.
Network Printers:
Laser vs. Inkjet. Using PrinterShare with an old LaserWriter might be an inexpensive
alternative to a new network printer.
Configure Network for Internet Access:
Need local IPs or using fixed IPs. Dialup access or dedicated lines?
Configure File Server:
Backup devices, additional storage, permissions and file access.
VPN (Virtual Private Network):
A VPN setup allows you to remotely connect to your office or remote location,
securely. Your computer becomes part of the remote network and allows you to
access email, printers, servers, and other network resources.
Firewall Setup:
How much of a firewall do you need? An Internet router can provide simple protection,
or we can help you set up a stand-alone firewall/VPN.
WIRELESS
NETWORKING
Wireless
networking enables you to connect computers without running cables.
In situations where you can't run a cable through a wall, or want
the freedom to move around on your laptop without having to plug
in every time you move, wireless networking may be a solution.
Wireless
networking uses a card with a transmitter and an antenna to communicate either
with other computers directly, or with a base station, which then connects
to the wired network. The range of each transmitter is limited, but multiple
base stations can be set up to cover wider areas in large homes or office
buildings.
Wireless
technology currently runs at 11 to 54Mbps, which compares to 10Mbps for
10Base-T and 100Mbps for 100Base-T networks. Speeds may be lower depending
on distance and interference from other sources. 2.4Ghz phones will
interfere with some wireless transmissions.
HOME NETWORKING
Households with one computer in
them more often than not seem to have a second or a third one also.
A home network allows you to share resources such as Internet access,
printers, and storage.
Adding wireless capabilities
allows you to move your laptop around within your home or property
and still have access to everything.
Home networking is essentially
the same as networking in a business, other than businesses may have
file, web, and email servers on their networks.
